The website sure does a good job of getting me excited to take another Florida Keys Vacation. This is one place so you definitely want to either take a charter or rent your own boat. We really never used to fish, but when you come here and it's just really entertaining because of the clarity of the water. Everybody will enjoy watching the Islamorada Fishing Video. See you on the water!
Do check out Whale Harbor Marina, as they have a whole slew of boats that go out on a daily basis. Park for free and then head down for all the information next to the boat docks. Then you too can take your Florida Keys Fishing Videos and submit the YouTube links. You will love the variety of boats here, we prefer back country fishing.
The summer catch offshore is dolphin (mahi-mahi), typically past the 300 feet of water drops. Try nighttime fishing in the summer to beat the sweat. We got plenty of dolphin, tuna, and yellowtail.
Robbie's Marina is a good pick to rent a small-cheap boat. It is located on Lower Matecumbe Key by the mangrove kayak trails. What a great location to begin your sea-life adventure. We got a 18 foot Wagner Boat for rent there. Had a blast. Just the boat to get you right up close to the islands and shallow backcountry.
We attended the Saltwater Sportsman Editors Seminar Series in January and thought it was excellent for the price. You almost a full Day of Fishing instruction from leading Florida Keys angling authorities. You also get a year subscription to Salt Water Sportsman Magazine. The fishing event was held at the Coral Shores High School Performing Arts Center, a nice venue for all (89901 Overseas Hwy Tavernier).
