This is a wonderful way to spend the day, just enjoying Smathers Beach in Key West. Smathers Public Beach has restrooms, outdoor showers, white sandy Volleyball Courts, two lane boat ramp, and Watersports Rentals. Be sure to bring your snorkel gear so you can see some fish as you wade in the shallow water.
The beach is beautiful and the water is quite nice. The scene here is very laid back. This is one of the top attractions on the island of Key West, and it is beautiful.
Surprising to many is the fact that the sand you see on the beach is actually imported in from other locations. Because of the reefs, Key West does not get the normal wave flow that you do and other beaches around Florida. This creates the beach sand, so Key West has to make it happen on their own. Do not miss a trip to Smathers Beach or Taylor Snorkel Park.
A picture speaks a thousand words and this picture says it all. This beach is waiting for you to enjoy. Smathers Beach is located on the southern part of Key West, close to the Key West International Airport. Be sure to set aside some time to enjoy this magnificent beach.
One of the things I was so impressed with is the way they cleaned the beach each morning. The seaweed can be crazy down here and can smell if left on the beach. We stayed across the street at the Sheraton and that's why I now know they cleaned them each morning with these big trucks.
The Volleyball Courts are a good area to sit at when you are picking a spot. It is nice to watch the beach volleyball, as it can be every entertaining. There is nice place to rent water toys and stand up water boards.
